Haigh, William Hooper

William Hooper Haigh (1823-1870) of Fayetteville, NC, entered the University in 1839, joined the Philanthropic Society, and graduated with second honors in 1842. He became a lawyer after studying the law with George Edmund Badger (1795-1866) in Raleigh, NC, for a year. In 1846 he married Badger’s daughter, Katherine Mallon Badger (1827-1905). Haigh served in the Confederate army and was held in the prison at Point Lookout, MD, at the end of the war. For a journal of his years as a University senior and as a law student, see the William H. Haigh Papers #2649, Southern Historical Collection, Wilson Library, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, which also contain two letters written while he was a prisoner in 1865.
